Now that my kiddies are feeling more themselves (both had bronchitis last week & one had a bonus ear infection) and I've had a chance to start my Christmas baking, I'm getting into the festive mood. I love this time of year! One of the things I really enjoy is sitting back and watching a favorite Christmas movie/show with my hubby & kids. This can be quite time consuming since we have lots of favorites in our house. Heavily in rotation are:
Elf - I'm not usually a big Will Farrell fan, but he was born to play this role. I love Buddy!
The Polar Express - Freaky, zombiesque eyes aside, the animation in this movie is fabulous as is the music. My kids have several dance routines they've made up to the soundtrack, which can be heard blasting from our stereo at any time of the year. I'm sure our neighbours are wondering if they're living next to a family of elves (insert Ray's short joke here ...)
The Grinch (the original cartoon, not the Jim Carey abomination of a movie), Charlie Brown Christmas, Rudolph - classic, classic, classic
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation - Chevy Chase at his best. Plus it's my mother's favorite, so every year I watch this in her honour.
White Christmas - It just wouldn't be Christmas without Bing and Rosemary crooning that classic tune ...

Ironically, Jim Carrey's Grinch is the ONLY Christmas movie I own.
Because no other holiday movie in history compares.
This movie is hysterical. This movie is heartwarming. This movie is fun for parents and children alike. And in case you weren't aware Mr. Carrey is a comedic genius, and my favorite performer of any medium and any genre ever.
I shall allow you to maintain your frankly crazy opinion, and I shall continue to frequent this blog, but we shall simply have to agree to disagree on this one. And as far as elves, I'll just have to take your word for how great they are.
I'm thinking you'd know better than me on that one.
A Christmas Carol is my all time favorite Christmas movie/book/play. I watch EVERY variation of movie, from the George C. Scott version to the slightly obscure "A Diva's Christmas Carol" with Vanessa Williams and John Taylor from Duran Duran as the ghost of Christmas past (hubba hubba!). Then I read the book, of course, and try to see at least once local stage production.
Hmmm...I sound a little obsessed. I also love Polar Express. We usually get take-out Chinese on Christmas eve and watch that or A Christmas Story!
PS I'm so glad the kiddies are on the mend! That's no fun at all!
Wow. BPV and I have that movie thing in common. Jim Carrie is the only one.
I have nothing I watch every year, only worn out Xmas CDs that are on repeat to drive my hubby crazy. Now with those I have favorites.

I love Elf! And Christmas Vacation! Those would be my two faves. And I've taken a liking to Christmas with the Kranks. I don't know why. I don't even like Tim Allen. But it's funny and sweet, which are always good at Christmas.
Some of my favourites are A Christmas Carol, the orignal one with Alastair Sim and by original I mean the black and white version, not the horrific colourized version, Home Alone, Christmas Story and The Snow Queen, although I haven't seen it for YEARS! Remember that one Tracey? Cartoon...1957...USSR...a Hans Cristian Andeersen story? I remember watching it on Christmas Day while eating our dinners in the rec room with our Santa trays.
R - Wow, the poor Veenie babies having to endure that Grinch year after year. As a fellow Canookian I am well aware of Mr. Carrey's acting abilities, I think he's brilliant in more serious roles, but his comedy is way too over the top for me. He was great in The Truman Show, The Majestic, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind ...
V- my favorite version of a Christmas Carol is Scrooged with Bill Murray. Chinese take out on Christmas eve ... not a bad idea.
E - I have a pile of those Christmas CD's too.
A - I haven't seen Christmas With the Kranks. I'll have to check it out. My oldest loves Tim Allen in The Santa Clause.
S - I have a vague recollection of the scene you describe. I think I always found The Snow Queen kind of scary and mean.

My favourite is actually a "made for TV" movie starring a much younger Courtney Cox and Hal Holbrook. It's called I'll Be Home For Christmas, and is set during WWII.
Next fave is the original Grinch.
I detest the Jim Carrey abomination too. I have no use for the man, as I knew his first, long-suffering wife slightly "back in the day" and knew what he was putting her through. Unfortunately I can't separate that knowledge of his personal self from his acting. *shrug*
I've never seen Bruce Almighty. I think it was playing on a flight I was on, but I fell asleep.

A Christmas Story. No doubt about it. I have watched it at least twice every year since I was ten (the year it came out). You do the math . . .
Who doesn't need a Red Ryder BB gun? Or a lamp in the shape of a woman's leg?
Elf comes in second. I love love love Zoe Deschanel.
